What does the future of medical assisting look like? Like many fields in the healthcare industry, changes and adaptations spurred by new advances in technology, health science, healthcare delivery models and more will have a large impact on the medical assistant career within the next five to ten years. This period of rapid growth within the field will likely shape the future of the MA position, and set forth new frontiers for current, incoming, and yet to be MAs.
Preparing medical assistants to accept the adoption and application of these new and emerging technologies will require a comprehensive shift in how medical assistants are educated. The need to educate current and future medical assistants in disciplines such as telemedicine, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and mobile health applications will be vital in making sure that medical assistants command a strong understanding of how these technologies will interact with patients, manage their care, and aid in their roles of providing for and delivering care.
Addressing these emerging technologies is the University of Providence’s Medical Assistant Certificate, which incorporates a comprehensive curriculum that combines online didactic learning with in-person skill labs and practicum hours designed to not only provide students with a foundational understanding of the medical assist field and scope of practice.
In an interview conducted with Nichole “Nikki” Garbarino, Program Director for the Medical Assistant Certificate highlights not only what to expect in the future of medical assisting but how the University of Providence is preparing graduates to face these emerging challenges:
What new technologies do predict having the largest impact over the next ten years?
“Emerging technologies such as telemedicine, electronic health records (EHR), and mobile health applications will significantly impact the field. As telehealth becomes more prevalent, medical assistants will need to become adept at managing virtual patient interactions through new and emerging digital tools. Additionally, advancements in artificial intelligence and data analytics will enable medical assistants to more efficiently assist with patient data management and interpretation, ensuring each patient received a more personalized approach to their care.”
How do you see the responsibilities of MA’s evolving as demand grows?
Medical assistants will likely take on more complex responsibilities as demand grows. Some examples could include roles in care coordination, chronic condition management, and patient education initiatives. This evolution will also necessitate greater collaboration with healthcare teams, enhancing the medical assistant role in patient advocacy and compassionate care.
What skills do you think will become important for medical assistants as the field advances?
Soft skills such as empathy, communication, and adaptability will be crucial as medical assistants continue to adapt in their interactions with diverse patient populations and navigate the evolving healthcare landscape. Hard skills such as proficiency in technology, data management, and understanding telehealth platforms will become increasingly important. Additionally, maintaining and evolving hands-on skills through regular training and practice will also be essential. It will be important for all medical assistants to actively participate in educational meetings to ensure they stay informed on the latest in emerging technologies and care practices.
How do you see medical assistant education evolving to keep up with industry changes?
Medical assistant education will need to integrate more technology and hands-on training to reflect the evolving healthcare environment. Programs will likely need to start incorporating virtual learning, simulations, and other emerging educational technologies that can be leveraged to better prepare students for real-world scenarios. Emphasizing a lifelong learning model, including attending trainings, career development, and emerging care events/workshops will ensure medical assistants remain informed about new developments and opportunities.
What advice would you give to current MA students who want to know how they can stay competitive and adaptable in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment?
Prioritize the development of a diverse skill set that includes both technical proficiency and strong interpersonal skills. Keeping your hands-on skills sharp through regular practice and by actively participating in required and options trainings and certification reviews. Additionally, students should take advantage of technology by utilizing online resources for information and to stay informed about industry trends. Medical assistants should also ensure they always renew their licenses and certifications as needed to remain competitive.
