Our very own Professor of Art and local artist, Julia Becker, will have her work showcased at the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art’s EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of Abyss, this August.
The exhibit is described as a cross-border multimedia environmental intervention, aiming to inspire change by unveiling environmental consequences of industrialized natural resource extraction.
Julia’s work, Body of Land, demonstrates the contemporary lens she uses to observe, document, and critique human existence and dependence on the earth. Her solo exhibit was sourced using inspiration from the surrounding central Montana area, as well as her vast travels. Julia will be exhibiting a series of paintings and prints completed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Julia says she was aware of both natural and manmade conflicts as a young child. “I was inspired to look through decades of work considering the concepts presented and found this vein deep in my life’s work. Having grown up next to what is now a Superfund site, a chemical dump in the middle of Cincinnati, and our family farm where I indulged in quiet time with nature.”
As for the audience, Julia hopes they are engaged and curious. “If another human can find any sense of wonder, inspiration, questioning, awareness, even beauty, or to be provoked in any way, we are grateful!”
Julia’s exhibit, Body of Land, will run from August 13 to November 3, 2021.
