Amber Flesch, a non-traditional student and senior, is a distance-learner/online student at the University of Providence completing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Legal/Paralegal Studies. Amber, at nearly 34 years old, found the desire to continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree.
“For years, I kind of felt bad about not finishing something that I started. I always felt like I’ve been a person that starts something, and I want to finish it. And, I wanted to finish the degree that I started.”
Amber originally worked at a construction company for many years and felt she was not climbing the ladder to her success. Finding a way to advance her career, she came across a law firm in Great Falls, Montana, where she discovered her hidden passion for law.
“I’ve fallen in love with it, and I feel like I am good at it. I enjoy it! And, that’s what I plan to do for the rest of my life now.”
Prior to UP, Amber attended Great Falls College MSU to finish her general courses and planned to transfer to an institution where she could pursue and dive into finishing her bachelor’s degree. The closest college she found nearby was UP.
As a transfer student, Amber instantly fell in love with the support of the professors and campus resources. She says the UP community has provided her with opportunities and the flexibility she needs as a non-traditional student and as a single mother.
“I love all the instructors. Deb Kottel has been amazing. It’s probably the best school I’ve ever attended as far as professors. I feel like everybody cares. They genuinely want you to learn.”
Although an online student, Amber mentioned she doesn’t call herself a “distance-learner.” The resources and professors on campus allow her to feel connected to the college and finds she is getting sufficient attention from UP and is getting the most out of her education.
“I love the school. I’ve become close. Like I said, even though I’m distance, I feel like I’ve made friends. It’s just a great environment all around. Personally and professionally, I feel like I have grown a lot here.
