University of Providence Student Government Raise Record Amount for Breast Cancer Research

FOR RELEASE: 11-21-24

GREAT FALLS, MONTANA – Students at the University of Providence raised a record amount in their fundraiser for breast cancer awareness research, raising a total of $2,650 during the month of October, more than six times since the fundraiser’s inception.

“In 2022, Student Government coined the term “Argo Strong” that is displayed on the t-shirts. This term is used to represent the UP family that has been built both on campus and in the community,” said Kayla-Marie Gumeson, UP Student Government President.

“I believe as a faith-based institution, it’s important for not only the staff of the University to be involved in advancing the mission and core values of the University, but it’s also important for the students to be involved as well. Cancer is a disease that affects many and if you personally have not been affected by breast cancer, there’s a high chance someone in your life has been affected by the disease,” said Ian Bechtel, Director of Student Activities and Events.

This year’s initiative included a pink Argo head t-shirt and breast cancer awareness wristband, which was given out to all UP students, with the rest handed out for a $20 donation during a “Pink Out” volleyball game.

With each fundraising effort, UP’s Student Government has matched the funds raised, donating it to the Montana Cancer Center at Providence St. Patrick Hospital. Two years ago, UP Student Government raised $250, matching it to a total of $500 in donations. Student Government was able to increase funds the following year to $1,000 in total donations, making this year’s effort stand out from the rest.

“I’m very proud that our student government has continued to pursue this fundraiser for the past three years, as this cause is near and dear to my heart. My grandmother was a two-time breast cancer survivor and I’ve known many women in my life who have battled against breast cancer. So, to be able to advise and oversee this initiative that a passionate group of students took on, was one that greatly touched my heart,” Bechtel said.

“A future goal of Student Government is to continue to collect donations and create awareness for not only breast cancer but also for other critical issues like mental health, domestic violence, disabilities, and suicide. I know I can speak on behalf of our student population when I say that the support our community provides to others helps us all stand Argo Strong together,” Gumeson said.
