Three Questions with Alice Dupler
- What do you enjoy doing outside of academia?
- I love spending time outside on the ranch with my husband and our two kids. My favorite hobbies are riding my horses and hunting.
- If you could create a new nursing specialty, what would it be and why?
- I would choose integrative nursing, where nurses are able to educate and provide resources to patients that target many aspects of their health. The longer I practice as a nurse, the more I see that patients have a hard time finding an attainable balance in their health journey. Despite the availability of resources at our fingertips, I find that many patients feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start or what to believe. Having a unit or clinic suite dedicated to educating (maybe in group experiences) on nutrition, exercises, social experiences, medications, etc. would be extremely beneficial in helping to improve health outcomes and reducing readmissions and improve mental and physical health.
- If you could give any piece of advice to an incoming student, what would it be?
- You get out of nursing school what you put into it!! Question everything – every patient health diagnosis, physiology of different systems, and the why behind every treatment. This will help you gain a deeper understanding of how the human body works and, therefore, the treatments doctors choose and the nursing interventions you choose. Lastly, take care of yourself!
