Hometown: I was born in Great Falls, but I spent most of my early years through high school graduation in Fort Benton, MT.

Education History:

BA in English/Professional Writing from Idaho State University (2003)
MA in English/Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Idaho (2005)
PhD in English/Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Nevada, Reno (2011)

Areas of scholarship: Rural rhetoric, ancient rhetoric, community rhetoric, rhetorical theory, the teaching of writing, learning theory, authentic writing assignments, artificial intelligence

Campus and Community Involvement:

Co-Director of the Writing and Critical Thinking Center
Co-Founder and Lead Social Strategist for Verum, a 501(c)(3) research organization looking at the impacts of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) on society, on the environment, and on our fellow human beings
I serve in a number of different compacities at my local church.

 

Advice for students: Believe in your ability to do great things, here at UP and out in the world. Have faith in the dream you hold in your heart and trust in the talents given to you to accomplish that dream. Know that the faculty here at UP will partner with you as you pursue that dream and will do all we can to help you accomplish it.

Favorite Things to Do in Great Falls: UP athletics (of course!), watching independent films at the various local establishments, Giant Springs State Park, art shows, book readings, feeding the ducks at Gibson Park, and anything outdoors

Hobbies: Backcountry hiking, nature photography, camping, journalism, writing & reading
